My Response to the Fall Economic Statement

For Immediate Release
November 4, 2022

OTTAWA – Yesterday, the government released their Fall Economic Statement, a budgetary supplement detailing current and future government spending. In response, Lianne Rood, Member of Parliament for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex released the following statement:

“I am disappointed to see the government has only used this opportunity to detail more spending at a time when Canadians are struggling to afford food for their families.

In every budget and supplement, the cost of government grows. This is driving up the cost of living to previously unimagined new heights. Under this Prime Minister, Canadians are now paying more taxes than they ever have. Canadians are now paying higher prices and higher interest rates as a result of the Liberal government’s poor policies. Justin Trudeau has added more debt than all previous Prime Ministers combined and plans to further increase public debt by $34.7 billion in the 2022-2023 fiscal year. This is not sustainable.

Recently we have seen reports that over half of Canadians are cutting back on food due to the price of groceries. This comes on top of nearly a year of financial strain over rising costs for fuel to heat homes, or to drive to work. Additionally, as interest rates climb, many homeowners are uncertain for the security of their mortgage.

It is more important than ever for the government to respect taxpayer dollars and eliminate wasteful spending. Conservatives like myself have been proposing common-sense solutions to the problems Canadians are facing. We are calling on the government to cancel their planned carbon tax increase, their planned payroll tax increase, and we demand they not introduce any new taxes or tax increases on Canadians.

The Liberal government continues to spend recklessly without any regard for the financial future of Canadians. Payments on the debt are escalating and by next year, we will pay almost as much in interest as we spend on the Canada health transfer. This is appalling. Under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre, Conservatives will continue fighting to lower taxes and bring common-sense back to politics!”

Lianne Rood has recently been appointed to the Opposition Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Eastern, Central, and Southern Ontario. First elected in 2019, she knows firsthand what rural communities are going through and has always been a strong advocate for rural Canada.
